Herodotus estimated that Homer lived and wrote in the ninth century BC. He is one of the most influential authors of all time, for the two epics provided the basis of Greek education and culture throughout the Classical age and formed the backbone of humane education down to the time of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity. From ancient epics to modern novels, some narratives have changed history and influenced the mindsets of generations, writes Martin Puchner. In my talk I will demonstrate the impact of Homer’s epics on the literary work of Constantine P Cavafy (1863–1933), one of the most important modern Greek poets.
